Paradise Lost – Daniel Solander’s Legacy – art exhibition touring Australia in 2020-2021
This year marks 250 years since Swedish botanist Daniel Solander’s arrival to Australia onboard HMS Endeavour. To commemorate the legacy of Daniel Solander and the first encounter between Sweden and the Pacific Region, Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia, the Solander Gallery in Wellington commissioned ten New Zealand-based artists to bring their unique vision of Daniel Solander, his legacy and of these historical events of 1769 and 1770.
The Paradise Lost exhibition has toured New Zealand during 2019 and together with the Solander Gallery in Wellington, the Embassy of Sweden is delighted to bring the exhibition to Australia. You can visit the exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney, where the exhibition is on display from 9 October 2020 – 14 February 2021.

The Australian National Maritime Museum is calling for Swedish stories for their Welcome Wall/A Mile in My Shoes Project
The Australian National Maritime Museum would like to showcase the voices and stories of migrants registered on the Museum’s Welcome Wall which features almost 30,000 names of people who have travelled across the seas to make Australia home, including 64 Swedish migrants. The next unveiling ceremony will be on 10 January to coincide with A Mile In My Shoes, the registration deadline for this event is 1 November 2020. For more information on how to register on the Welcome Wall please see https://www.sea.museum/discover/welcome-wall
The ANMM would also like to include a Swedish story in the second edition of the Welcome Wall Book which uses the voices and stories of migrants registered on the Museum’s Welcome Wall. The digital publication We are many – Stories of Australia’s migrants brings attention to one of the pillars of our national story – the making of modern Australia by its immigrants.
